Michael A. E. Ramsay, MD, FRCA, President of the Baylor Research Institute, leads clinical relevant research efforts for BHCS. In
additional, he is the Chief of Service for the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at
the Baylor University Medical Center and Medical Director of Anesthesia Services at Baylor Jack and
Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital. Dr. Ramsay is a clinical professor in the Department of
Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and a
professor in the Department of Periodontics at the Baylor College of Dentistry of Texas A&M
University in Dallas. He serves as a member of the Baylor University Medical Center Board of
Trustees.
As a practicing, board certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Ramsay provides anesthesia services in the
following areas: major organ transplantation, including liver, heart, kidney, and lung, as well as
cardiothoracic, vascular, neonatal, pediatric, and neurosurgical procedures. Additionally, Dr.
Ramsay is the developer of the Ramsay Sedation Scale, a measurement designed for interpreting the
depth of sedation for patients in the critical care unit.
A recognized and sought-after lecturer, he has given more than 150 invited presentations and lectures at conferences, seminars, and symposia worldwide. Dr. Ramsay has published hundreds of original articles, textbook chapters, and abstracts in the field of anesthesiology.
Dr. Ramsay is currently involved in a number of clinical research projects in which he is the principle investigator. His current research includes the role of nitric oxide in cardiac surgery and lung and liver transplantation, and physiologic considerations during liver transplantation.

Dr. Ramsay received his medical degrees from The London Hospital Medical College at London University in London, England, serving internships and residencies at The London Hospital, Northampton General Hospital, The London Chest Hospital, The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, and The Royal London Hospital. Dr. Ramsay is a recipient of the Nuffield Prize for Anesthesia, presented jointly by the United Oxford Hospitals and the Oxford Regional Hospital Board.
