All states routinely perform newborn screening that is designed to identify a few common metabolic diseases. The Supplemental Newborn Screening provided by the Institute of Metabolic Disease includes the majority of the newborn screening tests recommended by the March of Dimes and the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG), which may not be included in your state-required screening.
When the state-required screen is performed, a sample of blood is taken by pricking the baby's heel. For the Supplemental Newborn Screening, a small sample of this blood also is dried on a piece of special absorbent paper, which is sent to the Institute of Metabolic Disease laboratory for screening. The blood sample is screened using Tandem Mass Spectrometry, a highly specialized technology that targets and quantifies specific chemical compounds.
